Adventure Sports Week kicks off Friday on North Shore

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — The 2nd Annual Adventure Sports Week Tahoe, scheduled for Friday, June 15 through Sunday, June 24, will offer a series of mountain biking events in addition to its other outdoor sporting competitions, clinics taught by professionals, live musical concerts and family friendly activities.

“Lake Tahoe has long been a premier mountain biking destination,” said Todd Jackson, event director of Adventure Sports Week Tahoe. “Our trail systems are unique, taking riders through forests that give way to panoramic views of the largest alpine lake in the country. It was a natural fit for our event that celebrates human-powered sports.”

The Lake Tahoe Mountain Bike Race, scheduled for June 16, kicks off at 8 a.m. and has a 4- and 8-hour race that participants can engage in solo or on a team of two, three or four people. The Tahoe City course is approximately 12 miles and is a mix of single track and fire roads. It is a fast and smooth course with few technical sections. The rider with the most laps wins. Fast laps are estimated to take approximately 51 minutes.

Adventure Sports Week Tahoe’s triathlon competitions all take place June 23, with three different races in which competitors can compete. XTERRA Tahoe City, one of the events that make up the XTERRA U.S. Point Series, has outdoor enthusiasts swimming two 750-meter laps in Lake Tahoe with a 50-meter beach run, mountain biking 22 miles and trail running five miles throughout North Lake Tahoe.

The XTERRA Tahoe City Sprint offers shorter distances with one 750-meter swim, a 13-mile mountain bike ride and a three-mile trail run. The XTERRA Tahoe City Duathlon is a two-mile run, 22-mile ride, followed up by a six-mile run.

When participants pick up their race packets this Friday, they can take part in a free drop-in “Mini Skills Clinic” hosted by Tahoe Mountain Guides from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Tahoe City Nordic Center. The clinic will educate riders about how to corner, descend and ascend, and ride around obstacles. It is open to riders of all abilities.

Tahoe Mountain Guides will also offer a free “Local’s Mountain Bike Tour” June 20 at 5:30 p.m. Participants meet at Blue Agave in Tahoe City and will head up the Tahoe Rim Trail, which offers scenic views of Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River Canyon. The “Townie Night” Taco Feed at Blue Agave will follow the ride with drinks specials available to Adventure Sports Week Tahoe event attendees.

Sponsorship opportunities for Adventure Sports Week Tahoe are available. The organization just signed a sponsorship with Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. For sponsorship details, contact Jackson at or 530-546-1019.
