The weekend of June 9-10, Stefan Fellner of Kings Beach recorded a ninth-place finish in the Indoor Climbing Divisional Championship at ClubSport in Tigard, Ore.
Fellner, 11, competed in the two-day event against rock climbers from Alaska to Northern California and as far east as the Dakotas.
Half of the 22 climbers in his age group were knocked out Saturday by steep, technical slab climbing. The remaining 10 finalists battled it out Sunday facing an intimidating route that opened with crimpers.
They then moved quickly into a 14-foot, diagonally slanted roof to a final headwall with slopers, which shut down every climber from reaching the chains. The difference between first and 10th place were climbers within three moves of each other.
The Fellner family said competing in the championship event would not have been possible if not for the fundraising efforts of numerous local businesses and residents.
