CA senator Gaines gives Lake Tahoe fire safety a "C-"

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Wildfire safety has improved in the Lake Tahoe Basin in the five years since the Angora fire, but only marginally, according to a report card developed by California Sen. Ted Gaines that was released this week.

Gaines, R-Rocklin, gave fire safety in the basin a “C-” following a media tour through the burn area Monday afternoon. The fire destroyed 3,100 acres and 254 homes in June 2007.

The grade was a result of an analysis by the Senate Office of Research that found 60 of the 90 recommendations made by the bi-state Blue Ribbon Fire Commission following the fire have been implemented.

Approximately 10 of the commission's recommendations are works in progress and about 20 have not been implemented or have statuses that are unclear, according to the analysis.

“There has been progress made but we need to see completion,” Gaines said in a statement. “The Commission spent months developing these important recommendations and the people of the Tahoe Basin deserve to see full implementation.”
