Sam, beloved son of mother, Terryl Detmar of Palo Cedro, and of father and step-mother, Bill Brophy and Kay Clark of Santa Cruz; and beloved brother of sister and brother-in-law, Hillary and Jeff Jones of Shingletown; and beloved uncle of niece and nephew-in-law, Rebecca and Martin Rizzo, and of nephew, Nathan Jones, both of Santa Cruz; and beloved step-brother of Chandra Redinger, brother-in-law, Brian Redinger, and uncle of Josephine Redinger, all of Washington, died peacefully at home in Palo Cedro on May 18th, 2012, after a long illness.
Although born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sam’s true home and heart resided in the beauty and wilderness of the Sierra Nevada, specifically the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding mountains, and the Eastern Sierra Nevada. A mountain and road bicycle builder and mechanic at an early age, Sam was renowned for these talents by friends and co-workers, and was considered by famous bicyclist, Greg LeMond, to be the “best bicycle mechanic in the Sierra Nevada”. His other skills included those of ski repair and his exquisite craftsmanship as a finish carpenter.
Sam’s professions reveal his passions and, whenever possible, he sought peace, inspiration and freedom as a solitary and accomplished mountaineer, expert telemark skier, and of course, phenomenal mountain bike rider.
Sam, we will love you forever, and with you we send these soothing and freeing words of John Muir written in 1898, and for whom they could not be more true:
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings./Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees./The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”
Sam will be buried in the family plot in Redding Memorial Park with a memorial planned for later in the summer in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Those who cared for Sam may contact sister and brother-in-law, Hillary and Jeff Jones at email@example.com for information regarding the memorial.
