40th Shakespeare season offers romantic comedy

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — It's getting romantic on the lake.

William Shakespeare brings “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” under the stars of Lake Tahoe and onto the Warren Edward Trepp Stage at Sand Harbor State Park July 13 through Aug. 26 to celebrate the festival's 40th anniversary season.

“The location itself is one of the most beautiful ones of any cultural events in the United States,” said Lee Koch, marketing and outreach director of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

Directed by Charles Fee, the doubly delightful comedy is about two close friends whose friendship ultimately gets tested when Proteus forsakes his beloved Julia and competes for the affections of Valentine's newfound love, Silvia.

Visitors can witness a variety of authentic costumes, unique sets and even listen to live onstage music.

One of Shakepeare's first written plays back in 1590, it not only is about friendships, love and conflicts, but also includes two Tahoe dogs who will be on stage as part of the cast.

Filled with rich, romantic language, the comedic scenes display Shakespeare's copious comic powers at their hilarious height.

Great Lakes Theater Festival entered into partnership with Lake Tahoe two years ago, which has two other locations in Boise, Idaho, and Cleveland, where similar Shakespeare events take place and actors are coming from.

“It is a collaborative use of each others talents,” Koch said.

Every Monday night during their 40th anniversary, a lineup of live entertainment and music is scheduled with Monday Night Showcase offerings.

Offered are The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra “Under the Western Sky” on July 23, the Sierra Nevada Ballet “Giselle” on July 30, Tocatta's “A Continuing Requiem for John Lennon” on Aug. 20 and many more.

The six-event performance series begins Monday, July 16, and continues each Monday through Aug. 20.
