Fall in love with a painting, fall in love with wallpaper, an area rug, even a floral arrangement and#8212; and the color scheme of your dreams will magically appear! Anything with a pattern and#8212; including upholstery or drapery can give your color choices a wonderful starting place.

When developing your color scheme, remember the 60 percent-30 percent-10 percent rule of thumb. Your favorite color should play a dominant role (60 percent), while other colors should be proportionate to your dominant color focus.

Historically, there were definite rules about what colors went in what room of your home. Pale colors tended to be used in more formal settings, while bright primaries were associated with more contemporary, fun looks. But, for todayand#8217;s color choices, whatever you enjoy and#8212; go for it!
