Moyer to play ACC again

Celebrity golf fans will get to see a pitcher who has won a ball game during the current Major League Baseball season compete in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, July 20-22. Jamie Moyer, who played for the Colorado Rockies and the minor league affiliates of the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays this year, has agreed to come to Tahoe this week for the ACC, competting for the second year in a row.

Moyer, 49, is the oldest pitcher to win a game in MLB history, and did so on April 17 with the Rockies against the San Diego Padres. The Rockies designated the 25-year veteran, which eventually led him to the Baltimore organization and eventually Las Vegas, where he played for the 51s, the Blue Jays Triple-A affiliate.

Moyer was recently in the region with the Las Vegas team, when they took on the Reno Aces on July 3. Moyer pitched six innings, throwing scoreless ball till the fifth inning when the Aces erupted for four runs. They got three more in the sixth, ending his stint in Reno - and professional baseball for now - in which he gave up 10 hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

He will look to have a better outing on the golf course than the mound when he comes back to the area. Last year Moyer, who is currently a free agent, finished 71st and Harrah's Lake Tahoe has the lefty set at 15-to-1 odds to win the tourney this year.

Moyer began his professional career in 1986 with the Chicago Cubs and played with four other teams before landing in Seattle in 1996 where he stayed till 2006. That same year he went to Philadelphia and played for the Phillies till 2010. He was out of the big leagues in 2011 and joined the Rockies this season. He is 269-209 over his career, with a 4.25 ERA. He has pitched 4,074 innings and made one all-star appearance in 2003.

American Century Championship festivities start this week, with the Lake Tahoe Celebrity-Am on Tuesday, practice on Wednesday, the American Century Celeb-Am on Thursday and the ACC Friday through Sunday.
