Trails and Vistas | Discover your wonder

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Volunteer trail leaders are invited to Trails and Vistas workshop brunch at The Cedar House Sport Hotel July 29, 8:45 a.m.-noon. The training session precedes practice hikes on Donner Summit for the annual art hikes that combine original music, art and dance in nature on Sept. 8 and 9.

“We want our trail leaders to create an atmosphere of wonderment and reflective peace through silent walking,” said Director Nancy Tieken Lopez.

Trail leaders are responsible for guiding a group of 25-30 people on a two-mile, moderate single-track trail. The volunteer opportunity is ideal for people who are comfortable addressing a group of people. The trail leader will provide a verbal introduction and closing, however the “The Dreaming Tree” art hikes will take place in silence to emphasize the splendor of the natural world as well as the performance stops and art along the way.

This year’s art hikes emphasize an opportunity for reflection and peace. Trail leaders will have very few speaking parts but must be comfortable hiking, leading a group and staying on the trail.

Deb Kelly will lead the “finding your wonder” workshop and attendees will also have the chance to participate in a motivating team-building activity with Trails and Vistas board member Maria Jones. The July 29 training is exclusively for new and returning trail leaders. Space is limited to the first 26 people who RSVP.

Additional volunteer opportunities, including greeting, serving as a caboose on the tail end of each hiking group and helping on the day of the event, abound. Email Paula Messano, volunteer coordinator, at info@trailsandvistas.org.
