OBITUARY: Carolyn Lawson Kirby

March 12, 1931 - July 22, 2012

One of South Lake Tahoe's favorite Elementary School teacher passed away peacefully in her sleep July 22, 2012, at Aegis of Pleasant Hill, after fighting hard against brain cancer.

Carolyn was born March 12, 1931, in Oakland, California. She moved to Lafayette in 1948. She graduated from Acalanes High School in 1949. She attended San Jose State University, graduating with her degree in Recreation. She enjoyed working with children especially the Campfire Girls. Eventually Carolyn's first teaching job was at Healdsburg Elementary School.

In 1960, Carolyn moved to South Lake Tahoe, California to continue her teaching career. She taught for Lake Tahoe Unified School District from 1960 until she retired in 1990, and remained a part time textbook coordinator until 2008.

She married Robert (Bob) Kirby in 1973. The family took many long summer vacation trips through Canada and the United States, camping in a tent trailer and eventually moving up to a small motorhome. Carolyn loved camping, hiking, metal detecting, photography, and was an avid skier.

She was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob) Kirby who was the School Counselor/Psychologist for South Lake Tahoe Unified School District from 1964, until his retirement in 1990. She is survived by her brother Wayne Lawson, Lafayette, CA, four children and ten grandchildren including son, Gordon (Wendy) and grandsons, Conner and Ian of Reno, NV; Daughter, Erin (Joey) grandson Anthony and granddaughter Nicole of Roseville, CA; daughter Jennifer (Stuart), granddaughters Taylor, Emma and Lilah, and grandson Spencer of Charlston, SC; and daughter Laura (Paul) grandsons Richard and Jonathan of Austin TX.

At her request there will be no services. In lieu of flowers the family requests friends and supporters to contribute to your favorite charity, or to the "Potato Soup Foundation"., which is a non-profit organization that helps the employees and their families of Aegis in extreme times of need. Aegis is where Carolyn resided during her last few months.
