Bear killed in Homewood

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Monday morning, Placer County Sheriff's deputies found the body of a bear that was shot and killed on a beach in Homewood, according to a Channel 4 News report and BEAR League Executive Director Ann Bryant.

The California Department of Fish and Game is investigating and has the bear at a forensics lab in Rancho Cordova, but no bullet has been recovered, Bryant said. The Department of Fish and Game has not confirmed the identity of the shooter, according to the Channel 4 report.

The state agency did not return a request for comment Tuesday.

The bear, named Sunny, was the mascot of the BEAR League , a non-profit organization dedicated to bear safety and awareness, Bryant said.

"This was a bear that was very much loved. She was a gentle, sweet bear. She was a neighbor," Bryant said.

According to Bryant, there is no evidence the bear was trying to break into a house.
