INCLINE VILLAGE, NEV. — Organist David H. Brock’s 14th annual summer program Hot August Pipes features the music of Widor, Bach, Vivaldi and Scott Joplin.There will be performances Monday, Aug. 6 in a home on Kingsbury Grade at Stateline and Friday, Aug. 10, in St Patrick’s Episcopal Church at Incline Village.This year’s Bach will be Prelude and Fugue in E minor, BWV 548, also known as “The Wedge.”“The Fugue is not only the most daring but also the most difficult technically of all of Bach’s fugues,” musical historian Hermann Keller wrote.Written late in Bach’s life, the work reveals his finest compositional ideas and his abilities as a virtuosic performer at the organ.Back by request, Brock will present an original organ transcription of American composer and pianist Scott Joplin. He will play ragtime piano “organ style,” Brock said.The Concerto in A minor after Vivaldi for two violins as transcribed by Back for solo organ, BWV 593 also is on the program. Bach so admired Vivaldi’s compact and florid Italian compositional style that he transcribed several of Vivaldi’s works.“This concerto may be his best homage to Vivaldi,” Brock said.The keystone of the program is a performance of the complete Symphony No. 5 for organ by Charles-Maria Widor.“This massive five-movement concert piece concludes with the famous ‘Toccata,’ a fumble and a zing, pull-out-all-the-stops, tour-de-oprgan, trumpets-blazing finish,” Brock said.
