Pilot killed in single-engine airplane crash Thursday morning at Truckee Tahoe Airport

TRUCKEE, Calif. — One person is dead after a plane crashed shortly after takeoff Thursday morning at Truckee Tahoe Airport, an official has confirmed.

Ian Gregor, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration, said a single-engine Piper Comanche went down under “unknown circumstances” and crashed into a hangar at the airport at about 8:15 a.m.

The pilot, the only person on board, was killed, Gregor said. The person's name will not be released by local authorities until next of kin is notified.

The aircraft is registered to a Northern California man, Gregor said.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate this accident, Gregor said, with NTSB taking the lead. Typically, investigations take weeks to months before probable causes are determined.

No smoke, flames or wreckage were visible near or around the airport off Highway 267 and Airport Road as officials responded Thursday morning.
