Gas line secured after reported leak

Hotel occupants were advised to stay their rooms Tuesday evening after a backhoe reportedly severed a 2-inch, high-pressure natural gas service line on Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

About 11 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responded to the leak, which was near the Budget Inn, 3496 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Occupants of nearby hotels were asked to stay in place and await further instructions.

Highway 50 was closed from Fairway Avenue to Herbert Avenue from 11 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. South Lake Tahoe police and El Dorado County Sheriffs assisted with traffic control and forming an evacuation plan. El Dorado Sheriff's Office also requested that Search and Rescue Volunteers respond to assist with an evacuation plan if it became necessary.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department Firefighters assisted Southwest Gas technicians with securing the gas lines for an extended period. The gas line was secured about 12:45 a.m. No injuries were reported.
