Recycled book exhibit to spotlight importance of summer reading

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — As part of the “Summer of the Book,” spotlighting the importance of summer reading, the Truckee Friends of the Library is sponsoring a recycled book exhibit in August. Artists and book lovers are being asked to turn old or discarded books into artwork. Submissions are due by Aug. 16, with the traveling exhibit beginning Aug. 23. Artwork will be displayed at three galleries in Truckee: Bespoke, Lorien Powers Studio Jewelry, and Riverside Studios.

“This is a creative way to celebrate books — turning unusable and outdated books into artwork. I’m excited to see what kinds of submissions our local artists come up with,” said Ruth Jackson Hall, president of Truckee Friends of the Library.

The “Summer of the Book,” in partnership with the Tahoe Truckee Reads Campaign, seeks to raise awareness of literacy issues in the area. Currently, only 53 percent of third-graders in the Tahoe Truckee are reading at grade level, and nationally only 33 percent are achieving this mark. Research shows reading during the summer is critical to school success in the fall and beyond.

“The Altered Book Exhibit is a unique way to celebrate art, books and our community while raising awareness about the importance of summer reading,” said Laura Abbey Brown, executive director of Excellence in Education Foundation, the lead on the Tahoe Truckee Reads Campaign.

The Friends of the Truckee Library is a nonprofit, grassroots organization dedicated to promoting the library as an essential institution of society. Members advocate, educate, and raise funds on behalf of the library, its patrons, and the entire Truckee community. To learn more about the Truckee Friends of the Library go to www.truckeefol.org.
