CRYSTAL BAY, Nev. — Two of the funkiest bands in the area play a free show on Friday, Aug. 17 in the Crystal Bay Casino Crown Room.A veteran and rising reggae and ska band from Reno, Keyser Soze earlier this summer had a rousing performance at the Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival at South Shore. The septet will open the Crystal Bay show.Lake Tahoe Action’s 2010’s Band of the Year, Mama’s Cookin,’ wraps up the Crown Room show with Zeb Early’s metal-southern rock-hip-hop amalgam.Mama’s Cookin’The band creates modern-age rock. The solid drumming of Mike Adamo and resonant bass work of Steve LaBella build a foundation for Mama's Cookin.’ An accomplished front man, Early is charismatic and articulate. Hailing from the musical center of America's Southern Delta, Early came by his blues guitar work honestly. Songs of true beauty and deep intention, crafted with unique and timely lyrics, leave a lasting impression. Mama's Cookin' chose New York City to record their new album. The team that created the self-titled project features award-winning producer Chuck Zwicky (Prince/Jeff Beck) along with special guests Maya Azucena (Stephen Marley), and producer Pete Miser (Dido).
Keyser Soze has an original ska-rocksteady sound with strong jazz and soul influences. The seven-piece ensemble was originally formed in Reno by Jammal Tarkington and Rodney Teague. With the success of its first two releases, “Who is Keyser Soze?” and “Revenge,”the band has made a strong presence for themselves touring regularly throughout the West Coast. The group’s addictive sound has placed them in the position to share the stage with some of the best drawing headliners, including Michael Franti, the Wailers, Ozomatli, the English Beat, Toots andamp; the Maytals, Steel Pulse, the Skatalites and Burning Spear.
