Tahoe Twins secure top playoff seed

The Tahoe Twins thumped the Reno Hornets 7-1 and defeated the shorthanded Tahoe Braves by forfeit this past Sunday to clinch first place in the Reno/Tahoe NABA standings.

Right-hander Joe Thomas started and threw an effective seven innings, allowing only four hits and a run while striking out four. Gabe Sandersius pitched two scoreless innings in relief to close out the win.

They had plenty of offensive support. The Twins pounded out 12 hits, eight of which went for extra bases, and led 4-0 by the end of the third inning. They added two more runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Drew Lipnosky and Cory Munoz, batting one-two in the order, were a two-man wrecking crew, with each driving in two runs on two hits. Both of Munoz's hits were doubles, while Lipnosky also had a double.

Thomas helped his cause by going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs. Sandersius had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI, Jesse Brown had a double and RBI, and Steve Derby had a hit and RBI. Kevin Decker and Jesse Hildebrandt each contributed a double.

The Twins, riding a five-game win streak, will enter the eight-team postseason as the No. 1 seed with a 15-2 record. The Twins' first-round playoff game against the Reno Hustlers this Sunday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m. will now serve as Fan Appreciation Day (it originally was scheduled for this past Sunday).

The Braves are seeded fifth at 10-7-1 after forfeiting two on Sunday due to a lack of players. That puts the Braves on the road for the playoffs, where they'll face the Reno Creepers (11-6-1) at Governors Bowl this Sunday at 1 p.m.
