Bicyclist in critical condition, suspect arrested after chase

A suspect is in custody after she allegedly hit a bicyclist and led police on a chase before impaling her car on steel and conrete posts Tuesday evening.

The bicyclist, identified as Adam Rose, 38, was in critical condition at Renown Hospital Wednesday afternoon after he was reportedly hit by the driver of a white Subaru station wagon Tuesday about 5 p.m. near Highway 89 and 12th Street. Police said Rose was traveling in the northbound bicycle lane when the car swerved right and hit him. He was transported to Renown Hospital by Care Flight and was in the intensive care unit as of Wednesday afternoon.

After a chase, the driver of the Subaru, identified as Christine Whalen, 54, was arrested and charged with suspicion of felony driving while under the influence, felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor hit-and-run, misdemeanor evasion of police officer and misdemeanor obstruction, delay or resisting arrest.

After hitting Rose, Whalen fled eastbound on 12th Street, police said. A citizen who witnessed the crash followed the Subaru and called 911 to update police on the vehicle's location. While fleeing, the Subaru hit tree stumps off the side of the road near Tahoe Island and Tahoe Vista avenues, police said. Whalen reportedly continued to flee and eventually collided at 2070 James St., the location of Bi-State Petroleum, where it was forced to stop after the car was impaled on steel and concrete posts in front of the business. Whalen then tried to run away, but was caught by police, according to SLTPD.

According to police, citizens who saw the collisions helped police officers keep track of Whalen and helped identify her as the driver of the Subaru. She was treated for minor injuries at Barton Hospital and released to police, who booked her into El Dorado County Jail.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call SLTPD at 530-542-6100.
