John H. Anderson — loving husband, father, and grandfather, lawyer, avid hiker, and world traveler — died peacefully on Aug. 18, 2012 at age 86.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., of modest means, John enlisted in the Navy in WWII and, with the GI bill, graduated from the University of Rochester (1948) and the University of Michigan Law School (1951).
John married Marian Enid Barrett of Toronto, Canada, on June 7, 1952. They moved first to Denver, then to Casper and Cheyenne, Wyo., and finally, in 1960, to Santa Barbara, where John built a business as an oil investment consultant and they raised a family. In 1980, they settled in Incline Village.
In 1985, Marian, whom John adored, passed away. For the next 20 years, John traveled extensively, visiting more than 80 countries. At Tahoe, he was an avid Tramper. He loved people, conversation, adventure, and life.
John is survived by four children: Frank, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Lynn, of Palo Alto, Calif.; Lee, of La Quinta, Calif.; and Karen, of Orinda, Calif., as well as six grandchildren: Kristin, Elizabeth, Robbie, Cynthia, Brandon, and Jun Ru.
John loved music and opera, and, as Andrea Bocelli sang, it is “Time to Say Good-bye.” But because of his great strength of character, generosity, and warmth, John will live forever in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a future date.
