Regional cuisine gets the spotlight

Local growers, restaurants, wineries and artists will offer a taste of their work at the third annual Sample the Sierra festival on Sunday.

The annual farm-to-fork event will take place on Ski Run Boulevard between Highway 50 and Pioneer Trail and is reserved for booths and pedestrian traffic between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The festival pairs local farmers with local restaurants, whose tasting samples are then paired with a wine or brew.

This will be the second year at the festival for Cafe Fiore, located on Ski Run Boulevard. The Italian restaurant partnered up with Amber Oaks Raspberries to use fresh products for the food tasting.

"Cafe Fiore is going to be taking several of our different colors of bell peppers and they are going to be stuffed peppers," said Timothy Boughton, owner of Amber Oaks Raspberries.

The company grows its fruits and vegetables organically in Auburn, Calif., and will mostly provide vegetables for the event.

Cafe Fiore chef Gilberto Ramos, who developed a relationship with the business last year during a farmers market, will cut the bell peppers into sections and stuff them with a filling.

Typical Italian food, such as marinated vegatables and pasta with chicken and a cream sauce will also be on the platter of samples created by Ramos, who has worked at the restaurant for 20 years.

"We had a nice turnout last year," owner Nick Ashmore said.

Ashmore said that TahoeChamber, which organizes the food sampling, has improved the event over the last two years.

"It gets larger every year and they figure out how the public flows," he said.

Forty-six regional restaurants, wineries and farmers will participate and 23 artists will show their handmade goods in a separate marketplace organized and presented by the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and El Dorado County. Entertainment, storytellers, bands and acoustic musicians will also be on site.
