OBITUARY: Jerry Givens

Jerry Givens was 77 years young when he passed away at home on July 10, 2012 due to health issues.

Jerry was born in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma in 1934, then in his later teens the family moved to Dewey Ok. Jerry graduated with his class at Dewey High school in 1953. He went on to study at the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College in Oklahoma City.

Jerry was an all American at heart! He was a proud Marine and served two years in Korea. This is where he mastered as a night time Aviation Operation Specialist.

After serving his country, Jerry made a visit to Lake Tahoe where he instantly fell in Love with the beautiful sierras mountains and majestic blue lake. This visit then helped him to decide to make a move and live on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Shortly after he made residences he would get married which would not last... but would give him his greatest gift on earth, his one and only precious daughter Annie. Jerry liked sharing great stories of his most memorable times with his best friends. They had many adventurous camping trips that endured extreme hunting expedition. And there was also a competitive team of them who liked playing serious games of golf. You may even find a bunch of them hanging out at Topaz Lake with their fishing poles looking for "The Big One". And the one thing that is for sure if you knew Jerry well enough he would always be known to add a little fear to the fun.

Jerry got a job at the well known Harvey's Resort and Casino in South Shore Lake Tahoe... which back at that time was known as "Harvey's Wagon Wheel Saloon & Gambling Hall". Jerry was known for his hard work and innovating decision making. This is how he ranked his way up from the ground floor to earning himself a position as General Manager, and where he remained for 12 years. During this time is when he made the wise decision to purchase and move to his final home in Gardnerville, Nevada... With his management career soaring in the game business, Jerry would advance himself to a position at the multimillion dollar "Wendover Casino and Resort" in Wendover, Nevada. With all this experience Jerry would excel into mastering the casino business that eventually would lead him into ownership of his own Casino called "Jax" in Lovelock, Nevada. After his 40 years in the casino life Jerry decided to sell his business and finish off bartending at The Topaz Lodge, in Gardnerville, Nevada. Retiring 13 years ago you could always find Jerry puttering in his garden or tinkering in his garage on "The Duce" his Harley Davidson... this was his passion for life and it consumed his desires for yearly rides to the rolling hills of "Sturgis" a biker haven in South Dakota. Jerry also dedicated his time in teaching his daughter how to ride a motorcycle. He did this so she could ride alongside the scenic country side with him. It was one of his strange ways of showing his Love for her... because honestly... this was the only way he knew how. It was in these trips that they would create an everlasting bonding relationship. Annie gave her dad the most grandest gift a man could ever ask for, the gift to be a Granddad! His beautiful granddaughter Lauren is the second Love of his life, and her accomplishments have made him very proud! His unconditional Love for her will always be with her!

One of the most honorable achievements Jerry did for himself was finding his sobriety and being sober for the last 5 yrs of his life... So as Jerry would say "enjoy life because life is like a roll of toilet paper...the closer you get to the end the faster it goes" Jerry is truly missed and Loved by all "near and far"... He is survived by his daughter, Ann McLaughlan; and granddaughter, Lauren McLaughlan. And he also is survived by his three sisters Sue Smith, Jetta Fugate and Judy Pock.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Jerry on September 3rd. 2012 in Gardnerville, Nevada. If you knew Jerry and would like to attend Please call Annie for more info at 530-386-1135. Thank You.
