Blackie passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family and friends, on Friday August 24, 2012, at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Francis and Bella Veronica Gonsalves.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Nakaweesi Gonsalves, his sister, Joyce Scozzafava and numerous cousins who will miss "Uncle Blackie's" smile, wit and endless stories.
Raised in San Leandro, he attended St. Leander School and was a graduate of St. Elizabeth High School, Class of 1966. Blackie served proudly as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam. He made his home in South Lake Tahoe where he resided for 27 years and most recently resided in Sacramento, California.
Blackie was a professional photographer with his business in South Lake Tahoe. In 2006, upon hearing of the plight of the displaced Batwa pygmies, he went to work in Bwindi, Uganda to help the pygmies preserve their culture. Steve was also a member and past president of the Tahoe/Douglas Rotary Club and clearly exemplified, "Service Above Self."
Blackie was a fun loving, generous person since childhood and those friendships have lasted a lifetime.
