Incline soccer | Highlanders to host Ruby Mountain League

The Incline boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will compete in a Division III crossover tournament against the Ruby Mountain League this Friday and Saturday at home.

The two-day tournament is being hosted by all three Division III schools (formerly 2A) from the Mount Rose League, which include Incline, Whittell and North Tahoe.

Both Incline teams host West Wendover on Friday, with the girls starting at 4 p.m. and the boys at 6 p.m.

The Incline boys and girls host the same teams on Saturday as well. The girls take on Battle Mountain at 9 a.m. and the boys at 11 a.m., and the girls play White Pine at 3 p.m. and the boys at 5 p.m.

The Highlanders begin Mount Rose League play at South Tahoe on Thursday, Sept. 13.

According to the Tahoe Daily Tribune, the NIAA will meet Oct. 1 to decide if there will be a separate soccer state championship this fall for the smaller schools. Normally, a decision would have been made by now, but back in June it was unclear whether enough soccer programs existed among the small schools to support separate playoffs. Nine is the minimum number of teams needed.

The decision could easily go either way at this point, according to NIAA assistant director Donnie Nelson.

“I’d say it’s fifty-fifty,” Nelson said. “The reason why I think it would (split) is because I think we can justify that there are nine full teams in both the boys and the girls, but it’s pushing it. There are a couple programs that are hanging by a thread.

“The reason why I think it may not pass, if you look at the other 50 percent, is because it wasn’t approved in June and we’re already in the season.”
