Jesse Kalin using Kickstarter to make a new album

Jesse Kalin always has lofty goals.

His latest is to raise enough money to make an album with an accomplished Bay Area producer.

"I've done hundreds of fundraisers, but this is the first one for myself," he said.

Using the Internet program Kickstarter, the singer-songwriter needs to raise $14,000 by Oct.1. If the goal is not reached, the donors get their money back.

The pledges start at $1 and go as high as $1,500, which will get the donor a free home concert.

Kalin and Mark Wilson will have a fundraising concert from 6-10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Fresh Ketch restaurant in the Tahoe Keys. Numerous businesses have donated to a raffle, and a $100 drawing will be held for a home concert. An autographed acoustic guitar will also be given away.

Kalin has already raised $3,000.

Kalin and several guest musicians recently played a sold-out show in the Valhalla Boathouse Theater. It was an opportunity for Kalin to play his original music. A longtime South Shore resident, many of Kalin's performances are for casino crowds who want to hear classic rock covers.

"The town came out for me," Kalin said. "I was really humbled. He had rehearsed six hours and I was really pleased with the performance.

Kalin promotes Tahoe musicians on the radio station KTHO on "Jesse Kalin's Hot Picks and Hot Licks."

He is also very busy on stage.

He and Wilson play Tuesdays at the Ketch, his band Cool Black Kettle plays Thursdays at the Cabo Wabo Cantina and intermittently at Harveys Live Stage and he has an acoustic show Saturdays at the Rockwater. He's also a regular performer at the Beacon, which moves its music indoors in November.

Kalin is able to preserve his voice despite all the singing.

"I studied voice in college so I know some little tricks to keep it alive," Kalin said.
