Parasoland#8217;s Lucky 13 AmeriCorps Program

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The 13th year of the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation’s AmeriCorps program kicked off last week with orientation at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center. The 2012-13 team not only is the largest with 17 volunteers but has six members that also served last year.

“This is our largest full-time team to date,” said Parasol’s AmeriCorps Program director, Allison Eybel. “We also have the most returning members this year.”

Other special accomplishments for the 13th year include a new host site. Eybel said that for the first time in about six years, Incline Elementary is again a host site for an AmeriCorps volunteer coordinating science education programs at IES. The supervisor at IES, Eric Harssema, actually served as a volunteer in the 2003 Parasol AmeriCorps Programs.

“And we have two other host site supervisors that have been in our program, Eybel said. “Karli Epstein at the American Red Cross was an AmeriCorps volunteer in 2009 and Tom Rodriguez of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association just completed two AmeriCorps volunteer years (he served in both the 2010 and 2011 groups).”

After three days of orientation, the 17 members were introduced to the community at a welcome luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 6 held in the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center. Three state commissioners from NV Volunteers along with the CEO, Shawn Lecker-Pomaville attended the luncheon as well as host site supervisors.

“I was very impressed to see so many young people doing something for our community,” Manny Sylvester said. The local Incline Village founder welcomed the 2012-2013 team and administered their pledge of service.
