CR Johnson Birthday Rafting Trip raises $2,000

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — The High Fives Foundation teamed up with IRIE Rafting Company, Friday, Aug. 10, for the 2nd Annual CR Johnson Birthday Rafting Trip. The event raised $2,000 for the Foundation. Funds raised will be used to help injured winter sports athletes work toward their respective recovery goals.

The sun-soaked day on the river had 60 participants celebrating the life of, and remembering beloved Truckee native and professional freeskier, CR Johnson. CR Johnson’s incredible energy created a legacy of positivity and a sense of community that is now forever embodied in the CR Johnson Healing Center in Truckee. Johnson would have celebrated his 29th birthday this year. He enjoyed an amazing career in the freeskiing community until his passing on Feb. 24, 2010.- -

The day began at 8:30 a.m. at IRIE Rafting Co. with participants eagerly waiting to spend a day on the Truckee River; an activity with which professional freeskier CR Johnson was very familiar.

“It was amazing spending a day on the Truckee River with so many of CR’s close friends and family,” said Mike Laroche, CR Johnson’s childhood friend. “Growing up with CR, I was fortunate to spend a lot of time with him on the river. It was a spot that was truly close to him and there is no more fitting place for all of us to spend his birthday.”

Many of CR’s family and friends participated in the event. Frequent “Happy Birthday CR” cries filled the buses on the ride to “put in” just below the Boca Reservoir dam, where the Little Truckee River flows to join the Truckee River. Following instructions from the IRIE raft guides, the group split up into teams of six, filled the distinctive blue rafts, and faced the mighty Truckee head-on in memory of their friend CR. After laughs, and a bus ride back to IRIE Rafting Company, the group congregated at the CR Johnson Healing Center to view the facility’s new additions, and to enjoy a catered lunch from Full Belly Deli.

“On behalf of the High Fives Foundation, I would like to extend a huge thank you to IRIE Rafting Company along with everyone who attended,” said Roy Tuscany, High Fives Foundation co-founder and executive director. “We hope to continue to grow this event next year and continue to celebrate and remember CR’s amazing life.”
