Your and#8220;Ironman Lake Tahoe: More than 3,100 volunteers neededand#8221; article conveniently omits the fact that the Ironman is a for-profit event benefiting a private equity firm (Providence Equity Partners). Iand#8217;m excited to see it come to Tahoe and think it will be a great economic boost during the shoulder season. However, I find the call for volunteers a bit disingenuous.
Unlike most volunteer work, time given to Ironman Lake Tahoe will go directly toward lining the pockets of an East Coast firm. It will not benefit the disadvantaged, clean up the environment or help out a needy nonprofit. I wish no one ill will for participating if they have a personal incentive to do so, e.g., priority registration for 2014.
However your article should make it clearer that volunteering for the Ironman is nothing like volunteering for your local 501(c)3 nonprofit.
