Truckee volleyball | Wolverines take care of Spartans, Indians on road

The Truckee volleyball team defeated Spring Creek and Elko on the road this past weekend to improve to 7-6 on the year. The Wolverines have won five straight since the large-schools High Sierra Tournament.

Truckee swept past Spring Creek in straight sets, 25-12, 25-18, 25-18, and never trailed.

While the victory was decisive for the Wolverines, it was also bittersweet. Before the match even started senior outside hitter Mel Jones injured her eye and had to be taken to the hospital.

The injury had little effect on Truckee’s ability to control the match. In the first two games the Wolverines jumped out to big leads and used them to cruise to game victories.

They led 5-0 in the first game before Spring Creek scored its first point and then 4-0 in the second game before Spring Creek answered.

In the second game Spring Creek scratched its way back into the game on a couple big kills from Krista Langhans. Trailing 13-12 was the closest Spring Creek came.

In the third game Spring Creek got within 3-2 and 6-5, and almost scored to tie the game, but the referees ruled a replay on the point and Truckee scored the next point.

Despite the win, Truckee’s coach is still waiting for her team to peak.

“We’re not at our potential yet. We had nine seniors last year and we ended strong. This group has the potential to be much stronger,” Truckee coach Erika Murphy said.

Lauren Peak and Mackenzie Redner led Truckee with 8 and 11 kills, respectively, and Gabby Moretti had 24 assists and four aces.

The Wolverines got past Elko in four games, 25-18, 24-26, 25-14, 25-12.

Redner tallied a team-high 22 kills as Peak had nine kills and Becca Berelson five kills. Peak recorded 18 service points and two aces, while Moretti had 11 service points and Chelsea Mohun 10. Moretti had 45 assists and Kestlie Stefanelli had 22 digs.
