TRUCKEE, Calif. — Signs create first impressions and may unify and engage a community. Tahoe Donner has installed new, modern signs throughout the development to be completed in October. Twelve main signs and several smaller directional signs were designed and constructed by renowned sign makers Weidner Architectural Signage, whose clients include Adobe, Levi Strauss andamp; Co., California Academy of Sciences, Los Angeles Civic Park, and Northstar California.Tahoe Donner management and the Board of Directors feel new signs will enhance and better reflect the vibrant feel of the Tahoe Donner community. Director of capital projects Forrest Huisman said, “Once we started installing the new signs this summer, we received a flood of positive comments from happy homeowners and their increased pride of ownership. It’s encouraging to work with and see the commitment of the Board of Directors in making these and other association improvements, as they directly benefit current homeowners and their future generations alike.”The main monument at the base of Tahoe Donner is made of Cor-Ten metal — the latest trend in architecture because of its unique look and naturally oxidizing finish, which transforms into a rich color and texture while maintaining its durability for years to come. All new signs incorporate the profile view of two popular ridgelines: The Sierra Crest as viewed from the Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina and Castle Peak as viewed along the Pacific Crest Trail. Eight of the signs have been completed and the remaining will be finished by Oct. 8. All of the signage is built to withstand snow removal and extreme weather conditions and designed with a combination of wood and aluminum. “The challenge presented was to develop and implement a sign program that unifies one of the largest homeowner associations in the country and have the signage be a reflection of the culture and beliefs of the residents,” said designer/senior account executive for Weidner Architectural Signage, Arie Kover. “The branding and way-finding signage was designed and fabricated with materials to endure harsh Sierra seasons.”Like local ski areas and larger community groups in the greater Tahoe area, the Tahoe Donner Association is also improving its way-finding and amenity signage program for cohesive branding and a standardized appeal. At a cost of less than $700,000, each amenity and major intersection will be branded with signage that improves visual aesthetics, providing homeowners with increased pride, translating to sustainable property values, while also helping visitors successfully navigate to and from each amenity. Look for more updated signs next spring at locations such as the Campground, Cross-Country Center, Beach Club Marina, Alder Creek and Schussing Sub-monuments, and Boat Storage.According to Tom Johns, president of the Board of Directors for the Tahoe Donner Homeowner’s Association, “The new way-finding signage is part of the overall effort to represent Tahoe Donner as a first-class place to live and to continue to improve Tahoe Donner for our kids and grandkids.” Johns acknowledged some homeowners feel the new way-finding signage isn’t necessary. Said Johns, “Part of the reasoning for the signage is to incorporate cohesive signs in a way that will help people who are interested in buying a home in Tahoe Donner, visiting friends, or using Tahoe Donner facilities to find their way easily to our amenities.”Tahoe Donner is one of America’s largest homeowner’s associations, with 6,500 properties and 25,000 members enjoying more than 7,000 acres in the Sierra Nevada.
