KINGS BEACH, Calif. and#8212; A local man died in a motorcycle vs. pick-up truck collision Saturday morning just north of Lake Tahoe, officials confirmed Monday.
Mark C. Steffy, 56, of Crystal Bay, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:29 a.m. Saturday by personnel with the Northstar Fire Protection District due to injuries suffered in the collision on Highway 267 near Mt. Watson Road, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.
Steffy, who was operating a 2012 Yamaha FZ1 motorcycle, was traveling northbound behind slow-moving traffic when he passed over the solid double yellow line into the southbound lane of Highway 267 and#8212; the main highway connecting Kings Beach with Northstar California and Truckee.
According to CHP, Brian Brodsky, 30, of Citrus Heights, Calif., was driving northbound in a 2004 Ford F-250 truck ahead of Steffy. As Brodsky began to turn left into the Tahoe Rim Trail parking area, Steffy collided with the Ford driverand#8217;s door at about 8:41 a.m., causing him to be ejected from his motorcycle.
Brodsky suffered minor injuries in the form of cuts and scratches.
Steffy was wearing a helmet, CHP Trooper Peter Mann confirmed in an email Monday. The extent of Steffyand#8217;s injuries and what led to his death were unknown.
Traffic on 267 was slow Saturday due to the Tough Mudder athletic endurance competition taking place that morning at Northstar, where an estimated 15,000 people competed.
The accident still under investigation.
