Truckee soccer | Boys, girls roll Lahontan League opponents

The Truckee boys and girls soccer teams swept through a Division I-A crossover tournament against the Lahontan League with ease on Friday and Saturday.

The boys outscored their three opponents 30-1, beating Dayton 10-0, Fernley 11-1 and Fallon 9-0. The girls outscored their competition 14-1, with a 7-1 win against Dayton, a 3-0 win against Fernley and a 4-0 win against Fallon.

Shelby Matthews opened the scoring for the Truckee girls against Dayton when she headed in a corner kick taken by Olivia Duner in the eighth minute. Quinn Parker scored the second off of a pass from Kaylee “Ned” Neill in the 13th minute. The pair reversed roles in the 23rd minute, as Neill scored off of a cross from Parker.

In the 25th minute, Duner scored off of a pass from Marcelle Reynaud. Again reversing roles, Reynaud scored in the 28th minute off of a pass from Duner to give the Wolverines a 5-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, a Truckee foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick that goalie Cassandra Sawyer was unable to reach for the only Dayton goal. In the 71st minute, Neill scored again assisted by Parker. Melissa Cardoza then rounded out the scoring from the outside of the box off of a pass from Ashley Harris.

The Wolverines got off to a solid start against Fernley as well, as Cardoza scored in the third minute off of a quick give-and-go with Neill.

The score remained 1-0 until the second half, when Parker made a skilled goal off of a pass from Lorena Garcia in the 45th minute. The final goal scored was beautifully placed from about 10 yards out of the 18-yard box by Karina Rivera. Goalie Paulina Thrasher preserved the shutout.

Truckee again drew first blood within the first 10 minutes against Fallon, with Cardoza assisting Neill in the eighth minute for a quick 1-0 lead, which is how it remained through the half.

At the beginning of the second half, Neill was taken out on the outskirts of the 18-yard box, allowing for a direct kick that Duner placed perfectly in the far corner to increase the lead to 2-0.

In the 79th minute, Cardoza recovered a bumbled ball from the goalie to pull to the top of the box and then align a low-driven shot to the bottom right corner. The final goal came from a beautiful cross off of Duner's left foot that connected with Neill's head to push the score to the final margin. Sawyer played goalie for the Wolverines.

The Truckee girls are now 12-3-1 overall.

The Truckee boys dominated play

The Wolverines wasted little time getting to business in their 11-0 whipping of Dayton, as they scored in the third, fourth, seventh, eighth and ninth minutes to build a 5-0 lead within the first 10 minutes. They led 7-0 at the half.

Senior Jesse Fereira scored five goals to lead the way (the co-captain tallied 10 goals total in the three games). Thomas Arnstein contributed two goals, while Fernando Rodriguez, Leo Villa and Nico Kuyper scored a goal apiece, and Rodriguez had three assists.

Against Fernley, Arnstein put Truckee on the board in the 22nd minute off an assist from Jordan Fereira. The Wolverines went on to score two more goals in the half, then doubled their 3-0 lead with three goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

Jesse Fereira, Villa and Rolando Zarate each scored two goals in the game, while David Martinez and Jordan Fereira each had two assists. Kuyper, Jordan Fereira, Nash McMullen and Rodriguez had a goal apiece.

Truckee again built a 3-0 halftime lead against Fallon, using two goals by Rodriguez to open the scoring in the 21st and 24th minutes. Jesse Fereira scored the next two goals and had three in the game, while Reed McMullen got in on the scoring fun in the 44th minute. Jose Sarabia and Arnstein scored goals in the final minutes.

The boys are 15-2 on the year.
