Truckee's Kara LaPoint, author of the Sierra Sun's Endurance Endeavors column, won the women's 25-29 division at the XTERRA USA Championship off-road triathlon this past Saturday at Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah.
LaPoint was the first of eight athletes in the division, recording the second-best swim (32:02), best bike (1:45:46) and the best run (53:52), for a winning time of 3:11:40. She was the 16th woman and was 84th overall.
The national title marks the first of LaPoint's XTERRA career. She captured the West regional championship this year as well.
Several other athletes from the North Lake Tahoe area also brought home national titles.
Genevieve Evans of Carnelian Bay earned a national title in the 35-39 age group with an impressive finish in a time of 3:04:29, which was good enough for ninth place among the 102 women in the race and 57th place overall in a field of 319.
James Rawie from Incline Village also won the Menand#8217;s 65-69 division, recording the second-best swim (46:51), the best bike (2:29:24) and the best run (1:15:51), for a winning time of 4:32.06. It was Rawieand#8217;s first national title.
Rob Laurie of Incline Village finished one place behind Evans, in 58th, in a time of 3:05:06. Laurie was second in his 45-49 age group behind Bruce Rogers (3:02:44).
Josiah Middaugh of Colorado and Lesley Paterson from Scotland won the professional divisions, posting times of 2:26:57 and 2:49:09, respectively.
Neilson Powless of Roseville and#8212; who at the age of 15 won the XTERRA Lake Tahoe off-road triathlon and the XTERRA Tahoe City triathlon this past summer and#8212; was the top amateur and was 12th overall in a time of 2:43:32. Hannah Rae Finchamp was the top female amateur and eighth overall among women in 3:03:59.
Triathletes from 45 states took part in the race.
XTERRA Nationals is the last of 70 races in the XTERRA America Tour. Athletes first have to qualify to compete in the race by finishing among the best in their division, in their region, during the course of the season, which started back in March.
