Incline volleyball | Highlanders storm back to defeat Whittell

The Incline volleyball team appeared destined for a disappointing loss in its Mount Rose League opener at Whittell on Friday.

But after dropping the first two sets, 17-25, 23-25, the Highlanders stormed back and took the next three, 25-22, 25-14, 17-15, to earn the comeback victory.

"The girls really came together as a team," said Incline head coach Tacy Kelly. "We had to step up our play and earn every point in the last game. I was proud of my team and always enjoy beating Whittell in their house."

Kelly said Incline started slowly and was not clicking through the first two games. In particular, the Highlanders struggled with their serving and passing, and were not communicating on the court. But that all changed in the third set.

"We gathered ourselves and fought back in the third game for a win. The girls finally had warmed up and started to take care of business," Kelly said.

Claire Kent led the team with 15 kills, six blocks, two service aces and 12 digs, while Kira Porter followed with 10 kills and four blocks.

Ronni Flores had five kills and an ace, Katie Orlady had three aces and 14 digs, Michelle Tokunaga had 12 digs, and Megan Golden had two aces, three kills, 14 assists, and six digs. Sophie Shorin added two aces, three kills, seven assists and 16 digs, and Christina Cruz had a kill and two digs.

UP NEXT: Incline plays at Sparks on Friday, Oct. 5, and returns home to face Truckee on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m.
