Burnings! Bannings! Raffles and more!

Drop by the Kings Beach Library Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. to witness the raffle drawing for a Kindle Fire in celebration of American Library Association "Sign up for a card" month. While you're there, check out the fiery "Banned Books Week" display. Flames, barbed wire and caution tape are in use - be forewarned. Libraries are resolute advocates of the First Amendment and celebrate the diversity of their collections annually during the first week in October.

On Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. the Placer County Library Director and county planner will share their vision for the anticipated soft remodel of the library slated for Spring 2013.

Bring your computer questions to the library Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. and Carl Leblanc of Tahoe Tech Group will answer them. Free! On Oct. 25 at 2 p.m., Doug Greenwood of Alpensoftware will teach how to "Surf the Internet productively and safely." Call to sign up for the classes.

This month the Library Book Group will discuss "Roughing It" by Mark Twain on Oct. 18, 2-3 p.m. Refreshments provided.

'Buffalo Field Campaign Road Show' coming Oct. 3

Get together with Buffalo Field Campaign (BFC) for a free evening of story-telling, video footage, and music inspired by America's last wild buffalo and those who work in their defense.

Buffalo Field Campaign's co-founder Mike Mease will host a Night for the Buffalo, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Sierra College's Tahoe-Truckee Campus, 11011 College Trail, Truckee.

This Tahoe/Truckee performance is part of the 15-year anniversary celebration of BFC, and is one stop on an extensive educational tour throughout the western United States. Mease will share stories and video footage from the front lines work with America's last wild buffalo population, and offer ways to join protection efforts from the Tahoe/Truckee community. Join the growing herd of wild buffalo warriors.

As a special feature the evening will also feature live performances by powerful Native voices including Good Shield of 7th Generation Rise.

Burning Hearts opening reception

On Friday, Oct. 5, 5-7 p.m., join the Truckee Public Art Commission to celebrate the new community art exhibit showcasing the creativity of regional artists. The juried show "Burning Hearts" will provide an intimate look into the passions of regional artists. Wine, music, and refreshments will provide a festive atmosphere for the opening reception at the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District's Community Recreation Center at 8924 Donner Pass Road. Mindful Movie Mondays

Sawtooth Ridge Cafe, 877 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City, 6:30 p.m. Mindful Movie Mondays is a new, ongoing event at Sawtooth Ridge Cafe. Every Monday a different independent film will be show on a wide variety of topics, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Socializing is strongly encouraged before and after each film. The event will be set-up in the fashion of outdoor movie showing. People are invited to bring sand chairs and blankets to sit on.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments and a full bar menu will be available. Oct. 8, "Kymatica;" Oct. 15, "Wake Up Call."

Excellence in Education to host recognition and 25th anniversary event

The Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation will celebrate 25 years of supporting education in addition to honoring donors and educators at its annual recognition event Thursday, Oct. 11, 5-8:30 p.m. at the Squaw Valley Olympic Valley Lodge.

The event honors Foundation donors, the Linda Brown Fellows and Star Support Award recipients. The Linda Brown Fellows Awards recognize district teachers who go above and beyond in fulfilling their potential as an educator, show exceptional merit or talent, provide truly outstanding academic programs, and are extraordinarily innovative, and creative. The Star Awards recognize classified employees who also go above and beyond in fulfilling their positions, make a positive difference, and provide truly outstanding support.

The Alder Creek Middle School Band and North Tahoe High School Jazz Band will perform. Ticket price of $30 includes appetizers, a no-host bar and grant recipient displays.
