Incline tennis | Boys end regular season with win over rival

The Incline boys tennis team closed out the regular season with a dominating effort over an outmatched North Tahoe squad in the first round of the Northern Division I-A regional team tournament Tuesday.

The win qualified the Highlanders, who were seeded second from the Sierra League, for the semifinal round at top-seeded Truckee of the High Desert League. But Incline will be forced to forfeit because it will have only five players - due to fall break and family vacations - and a minimum of six are required.

The Highlanders will, however, send three singles players and three doubles teams to the individual regional tournament starting Friday, Oct. 12, at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Club in Truckee.

Against North Tahoe, with both teams playing without a third doubles team, the Highlanders took care of business, sweeping the doubles behind Nicky Witty and Blake Perry and the team of Jack Miller and Cameron Riege.

Alex Schrage overwhelmed all three opponents in sweeping his singles play, while first-time singles starter Russell Conway went 2-1. Conway's final-set win was the highlight of the day, fighting from 2-5 down to a 7-5 win, playing his best tennis of the season. -

Incline ended the regular season at 2-8 overall and 1-7 in league. The Highlanders were never able to piece together a solid doubles effort this season and could only score points through their singles play.

Even through the losing season, the Highlanders did improve in all areas of the game, showing strong effort and character against much stronger and talented opponents. Incline will be much improved next season, as the team loses only Schrage, Conway and Ornburg to graduation while returning a solid core of singles and doubles players.

Seeding for the individual regional tournament will be determined this week.
