Incline tennis | Girls take down Truckee, advance to regional final

TRUCKEE, Calif. - Led by strong singles play, the Incline girls jumped out to an early lead and carried the momentum to an 11-7 win over host Truckee in the semifinal round of the Division I-A Northern Region team tennis championship Thursday.

Truckee's boys, meanwhile, advanced past the Highlanders by way of forfeit, as Incline did not have enough players to compete.

Incline's trio of singles players - top-seeded freshman Anne Schrage and seniors Toby Felman and Ginetta Sagan - swept the first round and finished 8-1 in the match. Truckee's No. 1 singles player, senior Katey Hamill, defeated Felman 6-1 in the second round to break up the clean sweep.

While Schrage and Sagan won all three of their matches, Felman and the doubles team of Tara Lincoln and Amanda Pretti won two matches each, and Sierra Cistone and Angelica Lucero won one match.

Incline led 4-2 after one round and 7-5 after the second, during which Incline coach Jim Giancola credited his No. 2 doubles team, Cistone/Lucero, for pulling off what he called a "crucial second-round win" over Truckee's No. 1 team of Sarah Conradson/Sofie Maciel, 6-4.

"This is a lot of pressure for the kids, and it's nice to see them step up to the pressure and play well," Giancola said. "The kids were just competing and having a good time."

In the final round, Incline again swept through singles play and took one doubles set to secure the victory.

"I thought the girls played great," said Truckee coach Jessica Jacobs. "Incline was a good match for us. The girls are a little disappointed, because they were so close to going to state, but they had a good time."

With the win the Highlanders advanced to the team final Friday at the Reno Tennis Center, where they will face top-seeded South Tahoe of the Sierra League to determine state seeding. Incline is seeded No. 2 in the Sierra League.

"This is the first time Incline has gone to state in forever," Giancola said, later confirming that 1979 was the Highlanders' last state appearance. "It's good that the girls can be exposed to tennis at the highest level."

Truckee will also host the Northern Region individual tennis championships, which are scheduled for Oct. 12-13 at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Club.
