Letter to the Editor: Vote 'no' on Measure J

After watching the video of the debate and reading the proposal, I'm convinced that this is a bad idea and not through enough to prove that this will be a profitable venture.

There isn't a solid revenue model, or any research as to how current performing arts centers do in the area. There could be more research locally that will show unsuccessful comedy and film shows in Truckee, and not for lack of venue.

Performing arts centers in the area, Cal Neva and The Biltmore, appear to be losing money and have difficulty attracting patrons and performers to their facilities. Casinos like these and the Crystal Bay Club use performers to attract gamblers and charge little money, using the performance as a "loss leader" to get patrons to gamble and drink.

Why does the Park and Rec department think Truckee can build a new, unknown facility, that will attract patrons and performers and make a profit from these performances?

Note: Most of the profit that is predicted for the town will come from visitors to the area for performances. I haven't seen anything for how they will attract these patrons, or performers. There are marketing costs associated with these events. How much revenue have other events brought?

I want to see details. What are maintenance costs and monthly cost of operations, including loan payments and taxes? How do they expect to pay for it? What are the plans to attract patrons and performances to the area, especially when there are other performing arts centers very near that have difficulty?

Did the study of the area and the proposed $2 million per year income take into account the other performing arts centers in the area and their business models?

The proposal brought up more questions than it answered.
