Truckee SYFL Freshmen team rolls Carson

The Truckee Freshmen team of the Sierra Youth Football League, made up of 9- and 10-year-olds, celebrated a 44-7 win against the Carson City Senators at River View Sports Park in Truckee this past Saturday.

Truckee went into the game with high hopes coming off two straight wins and sporting a 3-1-1 record.

The Wolverines started off slowly after receiving the ball to start the game. After four plays, Truckee turned the ball over on downs to Carson on their own 28-yard line. Carson moved the ball slowly down field and eventually scored to lead the game 7-0. After taking the ball back on their own 30, Truckee finally got its offense rolling, thanks to a 65-yard touchdown run around the right end by Patrick Hogan. Nathan Bromley added the extra point to knot the score at 7-7.

From this point on the Senators found the goings tough on offense. Truckee's defense led by strong line play from Dylan Lewis, Matthew Villalba, Connor McMullen, Gavin Kelly-Caruthers and Bromley held Carson's offense from making a first down and gave the ball back to the offense.

This time Truckee gave the ball to Drake Rina for a touchdown run of 40 yards up the middle of the offensive line. The offensive line was anchored by strong play from Eric Spillman, Garrett Kirk, Logan Bates, Dylan Kane and Hunter Kacarka. Truckee came up short on the extra point but led 13-7.

The Wolverines would not allow the Senators to score again in the first half. Meanwhile, Truckee's offense was hitting on cylinders with Hogan scoring his second touchdown of the half on a 65-yard run and Kelly-Caruthers running in the extra point to put Truckee ahead 20-7.

Owen Slusher ended the scoring in the first half on a reverse around the right side, giving Truckee a 26-7 lead going into halftime.

The second half was more of the same as Truckee's defense had Carson's offense totally confused. The defense continued to get strong play from defenders Ethan Hatcher, Jordi Brenes, Jesse Meyer, Darrien Sveistrup, Rina, Hogan, Kane and Spillman.

While on offense, Patrick Hogan continued to shred the Senator defense for two more scores, giving the Wolverines a 38-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Nathan Bromley ended the scoring for Truckee with a tough run up the middle to make the final score 44-7. This win gives the freshmen three wins in a row and puts their record at 4-1-1 leading into a game this weekend against the Fernley Vaqueros in Truckee.
