Truckee tennis | Boys win Northern regional title over South Tahoe

The Truckee boys captured the Division I-A Northern Team title with a 14-4 win against South Tahoe on Friday in a matchup that was much closer than the score makes it appear.

Truckee's No. 1 doubles seed, Aaron Pado/Grayson Forsberg, almost lost their first divisional match, falling behind a break in the first set against South Tahoe's top seed, K. Swain/C. McHugh. They did struggle back to win 7-5, helping lift the first-round score in favor of Truckee, 5-1.

Pado/Forsberg warmed up and finished the day with two more wins, 6-0, 6-0. South Tahoe's No. 1 singles seed, Chad Kassamanni, had an excellent day, winning two of his three matches, losing only to Truckee's top seed, Jake Kamenetsky, 3-6.

"Our doubles teams were on fire," said Truckee coach Rick Deeter. "They did not lose a single set all day."

The starting duo of Zach Conradson/Aaron Deeter breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 win in their first two rounds. Tobie Ziegler/Colin Gerrard also did well, winning the first round 6-1 and then beating South Tahoe's No. 1 seed, 6-4.

In the final round, the remainder of the tournament squad stepped in. Eli Yale took a singles spot, winning 6-0. Travis Ferre/Tyler Paladino cleaned up 6-0.

The match that got some attention was Teagan Pado teaming up with Zach Conradson to take on South Tahoe's No. 1 doubles, in a set that stayed on serve to the final game. Both Pado and Conradson, formidable net players, forced South Tahoe to try and lob over their aggressive net game, to no avail. Several mid-court smashes concluded the final match, 6-4.

With the regional title, the Wolverines advanced to the NIAA State Championships as the No. 1 seed and will take on The Meadows from Southern Nevada on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 9 a.m., at the Reno Tennis Center (Plumas Courts).

Truckee also will host the Division I-A Northern Region Individual Tennis Championship this Friday and Saturday at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Club. Play begins at 9 a.m. both days.
