Cross country takes on tough competition

The cross country team took a test run on the state championship course Saturday and turned in a preview performance of good things to come. The Vikings got a sneak peak of the late November state championships when they traveled to Fresno for the Clovis Invitational. Many of the top teams in California, including a nationally ranked team, showed up for the meet. Despite missing several varsity runners due to SATS, South Tahoe held its own against the tough competition. “I was pleased with the boys' performances, even with a less-than-full strength squad,” boys coach Dominique Westlake said in email. “The boys ran some fast times at sea level and were happy with their races overall.”Harley Norton and Ross Kovac ran in the championship race for the boys team. Freshman varsity runner Logan Evans turned in a top time in the freshman, sophomore race with a time of 18:20. The freshman and sophomore boys placed 17th out of 28 teams. The girls team also faced tough competition, and the varsity girls placed 10th overall, and first in Division I-A. The girls first place finish means they bested Elko, which is last year's Nevada State Champions. “It will be an exciting rest of the season, with only the Sparks Invitational and then the Regional Championships and State Championships remaining,” girls coach Michele Nesbitt-Westlake said in email.Emily Treat turned in a standout performance with her 38th place finish among 248 runners. Freshman Tatum Whatford and Riley Rettig finished in the top 20 percent of their class. Cara Filce and Lauren Tang also had solid races and placed in the top 25 percent out of 206 girls.“Freshman Riley Rettig gave an outstanding performance, placing fifth out of 123 runners in the girls JV race,” Nesbitt-Westlake said in email. “Freshman Kerry Norton also gave a strong performance, finishing in 15th place in the JV race.”
