Truckee tennis | Boys clean up at Northern Regionals

A week after the Truckee boys tennis team captured the Northern Division I-A team championship, the Wolverines qualified two singles players and three doubles teams for state at the Northern Division I-A individual championships at Tahoe Donner this past Friday and Saturday.

In singles play, Truckee senior Jake Kamenetsky defeated junior teammate Branden Deeter in the regional final match, sending both to the state championship as Nos. 1 and 3 seeds from the North, respectively.

In doubles competition, Truckee's Aaron Pado and Grayson Forsberg defeated teammates Zach Conradson and Aaron Deeter in the final match, while Colin Gerrard and Tobie Ziegler defeated Fallon's Martin Beyer and Tyler Wood in the third-place match. That gives Truckee three state championship doubles teams as well, with Pado and Forsberg entering as tops seeds.

The Wolverines faced several tough opponents in the singles bracket.

Sparks' top seed, Ernesto Lopez, had breezed through early matches while Branden Deeter had to battle through three sets against Incline's Cole Steinberg in the quarterfinal round before winning, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Deeter then upset Lopez, 6-2, 6-4, in the semis.

On the other side of the bracket, Truckee's Jackson Rohlf played the Sierra League's No. 1 seed, Chad Kassamanni from South Tahoe, in the quarterfinal round.

"It was a close match that saw Jackson play some of his best tennis this season," said Truckee coach Rick Deeter. But it wasn't enough as Jackson fell, 3-6, 5-7.

That set up a semifinal match between Kassamanni and Kamenetsky, Truckee's top seed. Again Truckee pulled off an upset, as Kamenetsky came out on top, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, to advance to the finals against his teammate. Kamenetsky defeated Deeter, 6-4, 6-3, to earn the regional title and top state seed.

Truckee's results were even more impressive in doubles.

Each of the three teams advanced to the semifinals, taking out the Sierra League's top seed from South Tahoe and Fallon.

In the semifinals, Truckee's top-seeded doubles team, Pado and Forsberg, faced the Wolverines' own No. 3 seed, Gerrard and Ziegler, with Pado/Forsberg advancing with a 6-2, 6-1 win. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed Aaron Deeter and Conradson skated into the finals with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Wood/Beyer from Fallon.

Pado and Forsberg won the regional finals, 6-1, 6-4, to earn the No. 1 Northern seed entering state, while Aaron Deeter and Conradson will move on as the No. 2 seed.

Gerrard and Ziegler had to battle through an injury to Gerrard's shoulder but managed to forge ahead and secure the No. 3 seed after holding back Fallon, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6.

UP NEXT: Truckee will face Southern Nevada's The Meadows High School on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Reno Tennis Center (Plumas Courts). The individuals state quarterfinals are also at Plumas Courts, starting Friday at 3 p.m.
