Letter to the Editor: Please vote 'no' on Measure J

This past year, I attended several meetings of the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District and was a proponent of constructing a new pool for community use.

The issue of the pool had been discussed for several years. When I discovered that the District had $7.2 million put aside, I assumed these funds would be used to build a new pool or repair our aging pool. Then the district board decided to add a Performing Arts Center to Measure J.

These two unrelated issues should be voted on in separate measures. Our board has not exhibited the knowledge or resources required to run and maintain a performing arts center. The Lake Tahoe Music Festival was well organized and well supported by our community, and yet a couple of events that were beyond their control finally forced them to cease their operation. This summer, they started again with a much smaller schedule.

How is our current Park and Recreation board, with no experience in the entertainment field, expecting to run a performing arts center? It appears there is no business plan. There is a conservative estimate that they will lose between $75,000 and $100,000 from the start.

We, the taxpayers, cannot depend on outside help and promises. Before I vote for any measure, a business plan is needed. The Recreation and Park district should concentrate on getting out of the red and develop a well thought out business plan before putting forth a measure for a taxpayer vote.
