Anne Schrage proved that her No. 1 ranking was no fluke.
The top-seeded Incline freshman won the Division I-A Northern Region Championship at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center this past Saturday, as she defeated Maggie Lee from South Tahoe, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in a grueling, three-hour final.
The regional final match marked the third meeting of the season between Schrage and Lee, with Schrage winning two of three.
Schrage had to win four matches to take the title, including a particularly well-played match against senior teammate Ginetta Sagan in the quarterfinal round. Schrage won that match 6-4, 7-6, but Sagan was ahead in both sets before Schrage mounted clutch comebacks.
"I hated to see these two friends and teammates meet this early in the tournament," said Incline head coach Jim Giancola, "but that is how the draw worked out."
The doubles team of Incline senior Tara Lincoln and freshmen teammate Amanda Pretti, meanwhile, played into the semifinal round. They handily won their two matches on Friday before falling to a good South Tahoe team in Saturday's semis.
Lincoln and Pretti completed the tournament with a loss in the consolation round and wound up finishing fourth.
"They were a little disappointed, but finishing as the fourth-best doubles team in the North is a very good season for them," Giancola said.-
Incline's doubles teams of Sierra Cistone and Angelica Lucero and Kassidy Garland and Vivi Lucero were defeated in their first-round playoff matches, while Toby Felman defaulted her match.
"I am really proud of how much improvement each of these kids made over the course of the season and how well they competed in this tournament," Giancola said. "This new format (separating Division 1 and Division 1-A) clearly helped us, but their effort and their competitiveness took this team farther than anyone thought we would we go."
With her regional title, Schrage will carry a No. 1 seed from the North into the individual state finals, which will be contested at the Reno Tennis Center from Oct. 19-21. The team semifinals and finals will also be played at the Reno Tennis Center on Oct. 18-19.
The Incline girls as a team are the No. 2 seed from the North and will play The Meadows from Las Vegas on Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m. in the second semifinal. South Tahoe will play Faith Lutheran in the first semifinal match.
