Incline football | Injuries derail Highlanders in loss

The Incline football team put up a fight against host Battle Mountain through one half Friday night, but injuries took their toll in the final two quarters as the Longhorns pulled away for a 40-0 win.

"The score was not indicative of how well we played," said Incline head coach Scott Conn. "Battle Mountain is a tough team, especially at home, but we played with them for one half. We just didn't have the horses to keep up with them in the second."

Incline (5-2 overall, 4-2 league) trailed only 7-0 at halftime. But two key injuries, to senior running back/defensive back Brendon Steinmeyer and sophomore tight end/defensive end Ben Snyder, put the Highlanders at a disadvantage. Both players left the game with potential concussions and were held out the rest of the way to be safe.

More bad luck struck the Highlanders in the third quarter, as senior receiver/defensive back Michael Wegener and freshman running back/defensive back Kelsey Philpott left the game with injuries. Then in the fourth quarter, junior lineman Kenny Savelieff was hit simultaneously by two players and left with a concussion.

"Losing five guys that are integral to your game plan hurts," said Conn, whose 17-player roster was down to 12 by game's end.

Senior fullback Sean Herrera led the Highlanders with 78 rushing yards on 21 carries, while Steinmeyer finished with 62 yards on eight rushes and Jack Clouthier had one catch for 28 yards. Quarterback Christian Biscotti was 3-of-19 for 26 yards, with no interceptions.

Battle Mountain is 5-2 overall and 5-1 in Northern Division III play.

Incline will host West Wendover (1-7 overall, 1-5 league) in its final home game this Friday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. The game is homecoming and senior farewell for the Highlanders, who can clinch their first playoff berth in 13 years with a victory, Conn said.
