As a 17-year Truckee resident, and our local middle school music instructor, I whole-heartedly support Measure J. Having been brought to this fantastic community seventeen years ago by the funding of a similar bond measure, I know personally the incredible good that bond measures like this can create in the lives of young performers.
Learning research clearly demonstrates that schools integrating the Arts into the curriculum as part of a comprehensive education reform strategy are documenting improved student performance. In fact, the overwhelming majority of states require that school districts provide Arts instruction. Even the No Child Left Behind Act considers the Arts to be a core academic subject which can contribute to improved student learning outcomes. This is why I believe so strongly in giving young people every possible opportunity to incorporate the Arts into their personal lives.
Every day, I see the huge impacts that learning the Arts has upon my own music students, both in their educational outcomes and in their self-esteem. A venue which will allow young artists to publicly display their newly acquired skills is critical to furthering not only their skills, but also in inspiring them to want to continue on to make that Arts skill a lifelong talent.
As a child, I remember being in school band and going to real theaters to perform and to watch other performers. These experiences as a child are imbedded in my life experience and, without them, I do not know that I would have grown up to be a musician and a music teacher. I strongly believe that these opportunities should be available to the youth and community of Truckee!
