Man involved in Mo's Place fight dies

A man who was left in a coma following a fight at a South Lake Tahoe sports bar in May has died.

Derek "Zippy" Penaranda, 30, died Wednesday at a long-term care facility in Contra Costa County, said South Lake Tahoe police Lt. David Stevenson in a Thursday statement.

Penaranda was allegedly asked to leave Mo's Place because of unruly conduct while celebrating his 30th birthday May 20, according to a statement from the city the following day.

During the confrontation, he allegedly punched the owner of the bar, Manish "Mo" Patel, and knocked him unconscious. Penaranda was then knocked unconscious while being detained by the bar's security staff, according to the statement.

Police arrived at the sports bar about 12:30 a.m. and found Penaranda lying unresponsive without a pulse and not breathing. Firefighters performed CPR on Penaranda and were able to re-establish a heartbeat.

But Penaranda suffered "extensive damage to his cerebral cortex," from the incident, Wayne Penaranda, Derek Penaranda's father, told the Tribune in May.

Penaranda's exact cause of death will be determined during an autopsy in the next few days, Stevenson said.

Whether criminal charges will result from the incident is unknown.

"There is no information being released at this time concerning the possibility of criminal charges being filed, what those charges would be, or when they would be filed," Stevenson said in the statement.
