Godly play for children begins

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Godly Play began at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Incline Village on Monday, Oct. 8 at 3:30 p.m.

Godly Play was started by an Episcopal clergyman named Jerome Berryman. It uses a Montessori approach, letting the children come up with their own answers to what is presented in each story. After the "wondering" at the end of each story, the children then may choose an activity which reinforces the story which they heard. Godly Play plans to meet every Monday at 3:30 p.m.

On Oct. 8 the story of Noah's Arc was told and the children made an animal that was on the Arc out of Play-Doh. The following Monday, Oct. 15, the children enjoyed hearing about the Bible story of creation. They made a "Creation Tree" by finding and drawing some things that God created.

Story telling begins about 3:40 p.m., and the story and follow-up activities should be finished by 4:15 p.m. The stories are for the children's enjoyment and wonder. They are not "teaching" in the strict sense of the word. The wondering session after the story usually includes questions like: "I wonder what part of the story you liked the best?" "I wonder where you see yourself in the story?"

Judy Morrison has taught Godly Play in the past, and she said there have been very interesting and insightful comments from the children. All children between the ages of 2 and 7 are invited to attend. Parents need not stay, but are certainly welcome. Snacks are provided from 3:30 p.m. until about 3:40 p.m.

Morrison hopes to see all of your beautiful children. The classroom is downstairs, next to the Parish Hall, in St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 341 Village Drive, Incline Village. If you have questions, email twosoinclined@earthlink.net or call 775-831-1564.
