Three decades later, D'Ascoli Orthodontics is still proudly serving the community

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Thirty years ago this week, I arrived in Incline Village after driving cross country from New York City in my old International Harvester Scout towing all our belongings and Bessie, our Labrador retriever.

I left behind a teaching position as an Associate Clinical Professor at NYU College of Dentistry and an upscale practice on Central Park South in Manhattan to follow our outdoor adventure dream of living and working where you can ski and play, and I joined the orthodontic practice of Dr. Rick Ricciardi.

In May 1983, Dr. Ricciardi retired and I purchased the practice. I believe I have the record as the longest continuously practicing dental specialist on the North Shore.

Immediately, I was shanghaied into the Incline Follies by Dr. Tim Fraser, a local Incline dentist. In the 80s, the beneficiary was the North Lake Tahoe Symphony Association. No lip-synching was allowed, so we did have to actually sing and real audiences paid money to suffer through and support the community.

I've been privileged to be a cast member of the latest Incline Star Follies for more than 10 years, and I am thrilled that the beneficiary is all the Incline schools. Interacting with the student and adult cast members is a peak experience for me every year.

My daughter, now Kristyn Barry, went through all the great public schools in Incline and graduated from Incline High. She then followed Dad's tracks back to NYC to complete her degree at Marymount Manhattan College. She now lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband Ryan and our two granddaughters, Ashlynn and Kendall.

Our practice has always embraced the leading edges of technology in orthodontics. We currently offer Invisalign, Lingual braces (behind the teeth), Damon System self-ligating clear and metal braces, and Suresmile, which combines 3-D imaging and robotic wire bending to reduce treatment time by up to 40 percent. For the past 22 years, I have been utilizing dental devices to treat patients with sleep apnea and snoring who could not tolerate C Pap machines.

It's hard to believe it's been three decades, and I look back with fond memories and forward with the opportunity to create beautiful confident smiles for our patients.
