Lake Tahoe weather: Winter storm warning through Tuesday morning; 10-18 inches of snow possible

TAHOE/TRUCKEE - The first winter storm of the 2012-13 season is expected to continue through Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday for the greater Truckee/Tahoe area, NWS reports, bringing as much as 10 to 18 inches of snow along the Sierra crest, with 4 to 8 inches likely at lake level.

The heaviest snow should fall Monday morning, NWS reports, with a secondary band expected Tuesday morning. Wind gusts of 50 mph in lower elevations, with 100 mph gusts along the mountain ridges, are possible.

"Conditions can deteriorate rapidly during winter storms ... slow down and allow extra time when traveling," NWS warns. "Carry tire chains, food, water, blankets and a flashlight in your car in case of an emergency."

Sunny skies are expected to return by Thursday.
