Tahoe fire officials: Pile burning to begin Tuesday

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District will conduct pile burns Tuesday through Thursday of this week, depending on proper weather conditions and fuel moisture content, officials announced Monday afternoon.

The pile burns will be in the Wood Creek and Mill Creek areas and upper part of Saddlehorn, according to an NLTFPD press release. The Wood Creek pile burn area is approximately 20 acres, Mill Creek is about 8 acres and Saddlehorn is roughly 15 acres.

"Smoke resulting from the pile burns will affect the surrounding areas for approximately 24-36 hours," officials said. "People who are smoke sensitive are advised to please stay inside and close their windows and doors as much as possible until the smoke dissipates."

The first winter storm of the 2012-13 season hit the Tahoe area early Monday, bringing as much as 14 inches or more of snow to some of the region's higher-elevation areas as of mid-day, according to various ski resort snow reports.

The snow at Truckee/Tahoe and rain into the Sierra foothills allowed Calfire to lift its statewide burn ban; the California agency had suspended all residential burn permits and various types of outdoor burning within its 31 million acres of land on Aug. 15.

While the statewide burn ban is lifted, local burn bans may still be in effect.

"While the threat of wildfires has not diminished completely, many areas will be receiving enough rainfall to allow homeowners to safely burn outdoors once their local burn bans are lifted," said Chief Ken Pimlott, Calfire director, in a press release. "It is still important that residents monitor the weather closely, as a warming trend could increase the fire threat."
