Prepare an altar for departed loved ones Oct. 27

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. - Due to popular demand, the Family Resource Center of Truckee will host an altar building course in preparation for their 6th annual Dia De Los Muertos Fundraiser! Traditionally, as part of the celebration of El Dia de Los Muertos, celebrants create altars to honor loved ones who have passed away by including momentos or personal items, favorite foods of the deceased and Pan de Muertos (Bread of the Dead) among other items. The class will offer a short history of the tradition of El Dia de Los Muertos, expand on the purpose of altar building as a mode of remembrance, and end with each family beginning their own altar. Participants are encouraged to bring their family and include each member in the altar building. The class fee of $10 dollars per family will provide supplies to begin an altar and enter it in a contest to be judged at the Dia de Los Muertos event. Each contestant will be responsible for adding finishing touches and taking it to the event, where it will be eligible to win a prize.

The class will be held on Oct. 27, 10 a.m.-noon in the Truckee Elementary School cafeteria.

Spaces are limited please call 530-587-2513 to register.

If you are unable to attend the altar building, join the Family Resource Center's 6th annual Dia de Los Muertos Fundraiser for an evening of Mexican food, traditional dancing and songs, children's activities, altar displays, and fabulous raffle prizes. The event will have something for each family member and all funds raised help the Family Resource Center of Truckee serve families in need in the community. The event will be on Nov. 9, 5-9 p.m. at the Community Recreation Center, 8924 Donner Pass Road, Truckee.

For more information on either of these two events please call the Family Resource Center of Truckee at 530-587-2513.
